Bringing smarter electricity to the Bega Valley

Selected to be Essential Energy’s first Intelligent Network Community, the Bega Valley is experiencing an energy revolution.

Residents and businesses between Bega and Tathra will put the latest intelligent technology and energy efficiency tools to
the test from April 2011 to December 2012.

The trial will help us develop our Intelligent Network across NSW to meet the energy needs of regional communities in the 21st century.

The Intelligent Network will deliver a more reliable and responsive power supply between Bega and Tathra through a range of innovative technologies.

A sophisticated communications system spanning the trial area will allow us to monitor and control power quality and flow, making it easier to detect faults and resolve issues.

New technology such as line fault indicators, gas switches, reclosers and  distance to fault relays will help our crews pinpoint faults remotely, restore electricity automatically and divert power around problems before consumers even aware of them.

What's involved in the trial?


About 2,000 customers located along the powerline between Bega and Tathra will be able to experience the benefits of the Intelligent Network first-hand.

If you’re in the trial area, you’ll receive an IN Meter as well as complimentary energy efficiency advice. You may also have the opportunity to try innovative technology including an IN-Home Display or online customer portal, giving you the ability to monitor and manage your electricity consumption for greater energy efficiency and potential power savings.

Most importantly, by taking part in the trial, you’ll provide Essential Energy with valuable insights that will help us create a more efficient and customer-responsive network for communities right across NSW.
